Clinical Care of the Diabetic Foot Training Seminar

This practical course offers valuable advice for the prevention, care, and management of diabetes related foot complications. Topics include pathogenesis, prevalence, risk factors and classification, assessment and foot exams, preventive footwear, off-loading devices, debridement, surgery, and adjunctive wound therapies. The evaluation and treatment of Charcot's disease, infection and peripheral arterial disease of the diabetic foot are also addressed.

Course Objectives:
Describe how to perform an examination of the diabetic foot.
Describe the pathogenesis of diabetic foot complications.
Identify significant risk factors for diabetic complications.
Assess and classify foot ulcers.
Discuss the evaluation and use of shoes and insoles for at-risk people.
Describe the various options for off-loading foot wounds.
Describe adjuvant therapies as an important component in diabetic foot management.
Describe surgical and non-surgical debridement techniques.
Discuss the evaluation and management of foot infections, Charcot's disease, and peripheral arterial disease in the diabetic patient.

Bio For Elayne Sugar-Karrel - RN, MSN


Elayne Sugar-Karrel, RN, MSN earned her BSN and MSN at the Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis. She has practiced for more than 20 years at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. She has lectured nationally and internationally, and has published extensively in nursing and medical journals and books. She has served on various hospital and community-wide committees. She was the chairperson for the Clinical Specialist Committee, and a professional member of the Illinois Spina Bifida Association. She has designed and conducted numerous research studies, developed numerous patient educational tools, and organized support groups and educational conferences. Elayne enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband and 10- year-old son.
