This concise course explores diagnostic, prescriptive, and medication management issues, and follow-up related to children and adolescents who struggle with depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety, psychotic disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, Tourette's syndrome, conduct disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse.
Course Objectives: Differentiate major depression from normal life responses, and identify issues in the management of anti-depressants and instruction needed by patients taking these medications. Differentiate bipolar disorder from other causes of manic symptoms, and to identify issues in the use of medications to treat the disorder and instruction for patients taking these medications. Recognize causes of psychiatric illnesses and their implication for the use of psychotropic medications. Differentiate among anxiety disorders, and identify issues in the use of anti-anxiety medications and instruction for patients taking these medications. Identify medication management issues for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), borderline personality disorder, attention deficit disorder (ADD), aggression, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Select alternatives when initial response to medication therapy is inadequate. Identify unexpected responses of patients to psychotropic medications. Differentiate schizophrenia from other psychotic conditions, and identify issues related to the use of antipsychotic medications and instruction needed for patients taking these medications. Author Bio(s): Bio For Florence Roberts - PhD, APRN, BC Florence Roberts, PhD, APRN, BC earned her BSN at the University of Texas Medical Center in Galveston, Texas, her MN in Maternal and Child Health at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, her MSN in Mental Health Nursing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and her PhD in Child and Family Studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She has taught both pediatric and psychiatric nursing, but her focus for the past 13 years has been psychiatric nursing. She has served as an individual and family therapist and as a PRN staff nurse at a crisis stabilization unit. She is certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in adult psychiatric nursing. She is currently Professor of Nursing at Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia.
