Forklifts: How Effective Preshift Inspections Can Help Prevent Avoidable Injuries And Maintenance Costs Training Seminar

Nearly 100 U.S. workers are killed, and another 20,000 seriously injured, in forklift-related accidents each year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While OSHA requires forklift operators to receive both classroom and practical training with a three-year renewable certification, one area that's often - tragically - overlooked in practice is preshift inspections.

Preshift inspections allow operators to give forklifts a thorough once-over: tires, horn, lights, battery, controller, brakes, steering, cooling, fuel, and lift system. If a safety defect is discovered, the forklift is then removed from service until it can be corrected. But dangerous defects go undetected when a preshift inspection is skipped over.

Topics Covered:
  • Why preshift inspections are so essential
  • The components of a thorough preshift inspection
  • Best practices for documentation
  • How to address and correct unsafe forklift behaviors with employees
  • What to do when employees balk at the time needed for a preshift inspection
  • Real-life strategies to keep pedestrians and operators safe
