  • Be familiar with the applicable codes and standards concerning construction, operation, and maintenance of chilled water equipment
  • Thermodynamics - Understand the theory of heat transfer.
  • Know what atmospheric pressure is, and how it varies by location.
  • Theory - Understand the method of heat transfer used in chillers and chilled water systems. Understand compression-cycle refrigeration theory. Understand absorption-cycle refrigeration theory.
  • Know the differences in heat transfer from liquids to liquids, liquids to gases, and gases to liquids.
  • Refrigerants - Recognize the differences between CFC, HCFC, and HFC refrigerants
  • Prime Movers - Know the difference between reciprocating, centrifugal, scroll, and screw compressors.
  • Evaporators & Liquid Coolers - Know the purpose of the evaporator of liquid cooler in the chiller system.
  • Condensers - Know the purpose of the condenser in the chiller system.
  • Metering (Expansion) Devices - Know the kinds of expansion devices used in chillers.
  • Controls & Control Systems - Recognize the types of controls used in chilled-water systems.
  • Pumps - Understand the theory of centrifugal pumps.
  • Piping Systems - Understand the differences among types K, L, M, DWV, and ACR copper tubing, and their uses.
