Course Description
This course explores issues relevant to the assessment and differential clinical psychopharmacological management of children and adolescents who have mental health conditions. This intermediate level course will serve as a concise and practical guide for all behavioral health professionals who need immediate access to information on current treatments for children struggling with problems of depression and bipolar disorders, anxiety, attention-deficit disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and other problems.
Course Objectives:
Identify issues that are relevant to the use of psychotropic medications for children and adolescents.
Identify diagnostic, prescriptive, and medication management issues related to children and adolescents with depression.
Differentiate bipolar disorder from similar disorders and evaluate and manage appropriate medication treatment for bipolar disorder.
Identify diagnostic, neurobiological, and medication management issues related to children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and ADHD.
Identify diagnostic and medication management issues related to children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders, Tourette’s syndrome, conduct disorder, eating disorders, and substance abuse.

Bio For John D. Preston - Psy.D., ABPP
John D. Preston, Psy.D., ABPP, is a licensed psychologist and the author of fourteen books. He is professor of psychology at Alliant International University and has served on the faculty of the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. He lectures widely in the United States and abroad. He is the recipient of the Mental Health Association President's Award for contributions to the mental health professions. His publications include The Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists; Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology Made Simple; Clinical Psychopharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple; and Integrative Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder.
Bio For Mary C. Talaga - R.Ph., Ph.D
Mary C. Talaga, R.Ph., Ph.D., is pharmacy services manager at the Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center. She has been a pharmacist for over twenty-five years, with specialization in psychiatric pharmacy. She has held a number of management, patient care, and drug utilization positions throughout her career. Her current projects include development of collaborative care models for the treatment of depression in primary care. She frequently provides clinical in-service training to health professionals and general education to patients and consumers.
Bio For John H. O’Neal - MD
John H. O’Neal, MD, has been a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice since 1977. He is a past chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Sutter Community Hospital in Sacramento, CA. He is associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine and a fellow of the APA. He lectures on depression and psychopharmacology to mental health professionals, employee assistance programs, and the public. He received a master’s of education degree in clinical psychology from Harvard University.
Bio For Florence B. Roberts - PhD APRN, BC
Florence Roberts, PhD, APRN, BC, has been involved professionally in either maternal-child health or mental health nursing since the mid-1960s. She earned her BSN at the University of Texas Medical Center in Galveston, an MN in Maternal and Child Health at Emory University in Atlanta, her MSN in Mental Health at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and her PhD in Child and Family Studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She has taught both pediatrics and psychiatric nursing, but her focus for the past 12 years has been psychiatric nursing. She is certified as a clinical nurse specialist in both adult and child and adolescent psychiatric nursing. She has served as an individual and family therapist, a school therapist, and a PRN staff nurse at a Crisis Recovery Unit. She is currently Associate Professor of Nursing at Brenau University in Gainesville, GA.
