The Windows Server 2008 operating system is designed for IP-enabled networks and infrastructures. Also known as Win2K8, it is the server version of Windows Vista and includes new and updated features from the previous version - Server 2003. This version has since been replaced by Server 2008 R2.

Some of the features that have been updated in Windows Server 2008 include native IPv6 and wireless capabilities, as well as improved installation, diagnostics, increased security, .NET Framework and dynamic hardware partitioning. As a server-side OS, Server 2008 offers users different options than its personal computer counterpart. Optimized for use on a server, the OS is used primarily as an active directory service.
