Family Events: What to Do (and Not Do) When Employees Marry, Have Kids, and Divorce Training Seminar
It happens every day: employees get married or enter into domestic partnerships, they have kids by birth or adoption, their kids leave home and finish school, and employees get divorced or dissolve their domestic partnerships.
Family events affect the rights of employees and dependents under cafeteria plans, group health plans (including major medical plans, health FSAs, and HRAs), HSAs, and group term life insurance.
Family events give rise to employer issues and obligations under COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, tax, and other federal laws, and plans have to deal with them daily.
Using real-life scenarios and checklists, this 90-minute intermediate-level webcast was designed to help employers and plan administrators recognize both the obvious and not-so-obvious employee benefits issues and obligations - and to give them the tools to deal with those issues!
Here's some of what we covered:- Group health plan and cafeteria plan enrollment and election change issues, including deadlines for enrolling and changing elections, when enrollments become effective, and paperwork
- May benefits continue for a former spouse or partner after divorce or dissolution of a domestic partnership?
- COBRA, HIPAA, and ERISA requirements triggered by new enrollments, divorce, and other family events
- Do life events automatically change plan beneficiary designation forms?
- May a divorced parent continue to cover a child who is in the custody of the other parent?
- Can other benefits of a spouse, domestic partner, or child affect an employee's benefits rights?
- What do employees need to be told about how family events may affect their benefits (including imputed income issues), and how do they need to be told?
