This course covers the origin and history of the HP-UX operating system and its relationship with other UNIX family systems. It examines the HP-UX system components and addresses issues surrounding its use, administration, and development. The course highlights those aspects that make HP-UX an innovative operating system and provides some commmonly used UNIX skills and tricks.
The first unit, Overview of HP-UX, discusses the HP-UX operating system in a historic context and it examines the operating system architecture. It also discusses the relationship between HP-UX and other UNIX Systems.
Installing the OS discusses the HP-UX installation procedure. This unit also explains how to administer installed software packages and how to set or modify system parameters after installation.
Managing System Configuration examines the System Administration Manager (SAM). It explains how to use SAM and how to control access to SAM. It also describes how to adjust your HP-UX system configuration and how to limit access to the system.
HP-UX System Administration Tasks examines some important system administration tasks. It shows you how to properly boot and shut down the system, and how to manage disk quotas and swap space. This unit also demonstates how to backup and restore files and file systems and how to manage hardware.
The Logical Volume Manager is a disk management subsystem that allows you to manage physical disks as logical volumes. This unit explains how to manage disk logical volumes, mirrored logical volumes, and disk striping logical volumes.
System Security Management explains how to plan and set up a secure system and how to manage passwords and control system access. It discusses file and directory access permissions and the configuration of secure NFS clusters.
The last unit, Graphical User Interface, provides an overview of the development of X Windows and describes the graphical user interfaces available with HP-UX. It describes the HP Visual User Environment and explains how to navigate within this environment.
