z/OS System Operations - ES270 Training Seminar

Get an overview of the z/OS Operating System (OS). Look at the systems from both a hardware and software perspective. Develop a basic understanding of z/OS, Processor Resource/Systems Manager (PR/SM), Job Entry Subsystem 2 (JES2), Job Entry Subsystem 3 (JES3), Tivoli NetView for z/OS, Time Sharing Option (TSO), z/OS Communications Server, Enterprise System Connection (ESCON) and Fiber Connector (FICON), and the Initial Program Loader (IPL) process. Become comfortable issuing z/OS commands from a system console, from a TSO console, and from a Tivoli NetView console.

	Review of zSeries and z/OS Describe the z/Architecture Name the characteristics of the zSeries processors Provide an overview of z/OS, its components, and delivery process Explain the concept of virtual storage and its exploitation in z/OS Overview of JES and TSO Explain the differences between JES2 and JES3 Identify JES2 messages Issue basic JES2 commands Establish a TSO/Extensions (TSO/E) session and work with Interactive System Productivity Facility/Program Development Facility (ISPF/PDF) panels Use System Display and Search Facility (SDSF) to view held job output and view the system log z/OS Data Sets Describe the naming rules for z/OS data sets Describe the z/OS catalog structure Describe the functions performed by DFSMS, DFSMS data set services (DFSMSdss), DFSMS hierarchical storage management (DFSMShsm), and DFSMS removable media manager (DFSMSrmm) to help manage the data sets in a data center Describe the function of Job Control Language (JCL) cataloged procedures z/OS IPL Flow Describe the functions performed by the Nucleus Initialization Program (NIP) to initialize the system Respond to NIP messages Perform a successful load of any z/OS system z/OS Consoles Operation Determine the status and parameters of any console Perform recovery procedures for console error conditions z/OS Commands Issue z/OS commands with the correct syntax Become familiar with the z/OS commands Interpret the results of z/OS commands Controlling z/OS Networking, Transaction Processing, and Database Applications Describe the basic function of Tivoli NetView, z/OS Communications Server System Network Architecture (SNA), TCP/IP, CICS, and DB2 Identify system messages issued by Tivoli NetView, z/OS Communications Server SNA, TCP/IP, CICS, and DB2 Enter basic commands as directed by your senior operations staff and systems programming staff


	Audience
	This is a basic course for system programmers, operators, system administrators, and individuals who need to use a z/OS system. It is intended for students with either S/390 or zSeries servers. Also, this is a great refresher course for individuals who want to sharpen their system skills.


	Pre-requisites
	Fundamental System Skills in z/OS - ES10A or basic knowledge of z/OS
