Executive Training

Executives hold a role unlike those of most managers based simply on the sheer scale of their responsibilities. While many business leaders are responsible for hiring, training and managing anywhere from a handful to several dozen people, others must oversee entire departments comprising multiple such managers and their employees. Some executives are responsible for multiple departments or even, in essence, multiple businesses.

The jump from one level of management to another can change the complexity of problems dramatically, simply by changing the way in which people must interact with their businesses. While project managers have the opportunity to speak and work directly with the people for whom they are responsible, higher level executives might not even speak regularly with managers, much less with the workers themselves. This changes the task of leadership dramatically from a personal to an organizational level, requiring executives to change the ways in which they approach problems.

Understanding this shift can be a substantial challenge, especially for new executives who have never been introduced to this type of abstract thinking. While working in a department confers some sense of the challenges and responsibilities faced by lower management, few employees are provided the opportunity to interact regularly with high-level executives.

The nature of problems and means of addressing them are not the only major shift when moving to the upper tiers of a business' leadership. The kind and quality of information provided to business leaders changes as well, so that executives must make decisions based on similarly abstract statistics or second- and third-hand information.

These difficulties represent only a fraction of the pressures particular to the upper echelons of leadership and management, but they well encapsulate the dramatic shift that new executives must make to adjust to their new roles. With a unique set of challenges must come a unique style of training and a growing number of schools and businesses have begun to offer executive training to help people tackle this difficult transition, or simply improve upon existing strategies. Many of these institutions have even begun to offer companies and organizations the opportunity to tailor training to the specific challenges faced by their industry, allowing them to address the problems executives are most likely to face in a manner consistent with their strategies and policies.
