Daily life is full of stresses and difficulties that people must
overcome as a matter of course. But some events, both good and bad, can
take more of a person's attention than they can give while still
working. New children require near constant monitoring and sick family
members can prove just as demanding. With that in mind, Congress passed
the Family and Medical Leave Act allowing workers to take as much as 12
weeks off to address these issues without fear of losing their jobs.
The FMLA became effective August 5, 1993, for employers and employees. The FMLA allows employees to balance their work and family life by taking reasonable unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons. Covered employers must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for reasons specified by law.
Periodically, the Department of Labor issues updates and new regulations that employers must comply with or face stiff penalties. It is every organization's responsibility to stay abreast of all pertinent information regarding their employees and the FMLA.
As an HR professional, do you know how to define what types of events qualify for FMLA leave? Can you determine when an employee's absence is covered under the FMLA? TrainUp.com offers FMLA training courses covering FMLA regulations and FMLA standards, as well as FMLA changes covering FMLA law and FMLA guidelines. Become an FMLA expert with our FMLA Training & Certification Program or stay informed with our FMLA Update courses annually.
TrainUp can help companies find FMLA training programs that detail what situations meet the criteria for the law and what the expectations are on both business and employee.
