Administrative assistants are personal assistants to managers or company executives. While they often perform the duties of a secretary - taking dictation, answering phone calls, ordering supplies and maintaining files - they may also act as their employer's aide, screening visitors and organizing itineraries, among other duties.

The primary difference between a secretary and an administrative assistant is that the latter often spends more time working directly with the manager. They are also sometimes known as administrative professionals or executive assistants.

These professionals work to alleviate stress, promote positive attitudes in the workplace, manage office politics and even run an office when the manager is absent. Filling a very important role, they must be attentive, courteous, have strong analytical skills and be able to think quickly on their own.
