Any longtime Flash or Dreamweaver user will know that these web development programs, now owned and produced by Adobe, were originally created by Macromedia. In 1992, Macromedia created Director, an interactive multimedia creation tool. Director was originally used for CD-Rom design. However, in the mid-90's, as CD-Rom use declined and the internet rose in popularity, Macromedia released Shockwave, a viewer plugin for web browsers that allowed developers to create animation and interactive graphics to websites.

Eventually, as Macromedia grew, it expanded its web animation offerings to include Flash, its newest browser plugin for interactive multimedia. The Flash player allows web browsers to view and play flash movies and games, while the full program enables the creation of those projects.

Around the same time, Macromedia also released the HTML authoring studio Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver allowed web designers to simplify the page creation process, speeding up development time and improving the clarity and quality of coding.

In 2005, Adobe acquired Macromedia and continued the development of Dreamweaver and Flash, integrating both programs with its other multimedia software offerings like Photoshop and Illustrator. Today, Flash is one of the most popular animation tools for the web, and Dreamweaver is considered one of the top programs for web design.
